How the Croatian alphabet |
Croatians have emigrated to many countries; the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Peru are just some of them. Within each country are many communities where Croatians congregated and settled, seeking the companionship of their own kind. When looking for lost ancestors or when writing a family history, it is a good idea to check the history of these communities to see if someone in your family lived or visited there. This section is an attempt to list these communities and to provide resources, contacts, and lists of surnames specific to each place. Please add to this list. First of all, we need more names of communities. Then within each community we are looking for lists of surnames, photos, books, lists of documents, etc. that can help people find their Croatian ancestors. Some possibilities are: naturalization records, city directories, voting records, museum and archive collections, census records. (See "Watsonville" below for examples and possibilities.) Such lists take time to index but if you collect them, we will provide this space to post your findings. Here is our email address (please put "Croatian communities" in the subject heading).
