Charts from Stanovnis"tvo Konavala, Vol. 2
This book has 88 charts of this type (below) covering all the villages of Konavle. Some villages require more than one chart, e.g., Cavtat has 12. Of the various features of these books, these charts (and accompanying text) are of the most value to genealogists.
The chart below shows the surnames in the village of Mikulic'i as traced through old census records and tax rolls in the Dubrovnik Archive. At the top is the time-line (from 1500 to 1900). Below that line are orange boxes containing years. They represent the various censuses and tax rolls that the names are derived from. In a vertical column below each of these boxes are smaller orange boxes with numbers in them. A box represents a household, and each number corresponds to the name of the head of household, which can be found in the text. For example, beneath the orange box with "1673" is a vertical column of small orange boxes with numbers from 1 to 16. The text for this 1673 census reads like this. As you can see, each number represents a householder. The number in parentheses after each name is the number of people within that household.
However, not all names are surnames, especially in the older documents. Some are patronyms or patronymic surnames (example: Ivan Pavlovich whose son, Marko, is named Marko Ivanovich). True surnames are shown in all capital letters within green or yellow boxes. Green boxes represent information that will be found in an upcoming series of books, Konavoski Rodovi. The numbers within the small green boxes are reference numbers for those publications. The names in capitalized lower-case letters (within yellow boxes) are nicknames of family branches.
Information for these charts comes from 6 censuses and tax rolls (represented by the 6 large orange boxes containing year numbers, beneath the time-line), various other Archive documents (small green boxes), and church records found in the Archive and in the local churches.
